Disinfectant charger, eucalyptus sneakers, eco-friendly vodka, self-cleaning robot vacuum cleaner, and more.
Time magazine has already started summing up the year. In the first article devoted to this topic, the representatives of the publication named the 100 main inventions of 2020. They are all divided into two dozen categories. We chose 15 pretty interesting devices and technologies that you might not have heard of.
1.reMarkable 2
ReMarkable, released in 2016, allowed for electronic recording, but with the feel of writing on paper and converting handwritten text to electronic. The new version of this device has become even more perfect. reMarkable 2 has an improved screen based on E Ink Carta technology, which completely simulates paper. The device is only about 5mm thick and lasts up to two weeks on battery power.
2. Breathe99 B2
When it comes to containing the spread of COVID-19, there is no more important invention than a face mask. This is definitely the very consumer product that defines 2020. And although any variation can be considered "the best invention", the representatives of Time were most surprised by several models. One of them is B2 from Breathe99. This is a flexible, rubber-like face mask that has two replaceable filters that protect against 99.6% of particles. This mask is machine washable.
3. Augmedics Xvision
A truly important and useful gadget designed to facilitate the work of surgeons. This is a headset that uses augmented reality to turn a patient's CT scan into 3D imaging. During surgery, xvision can superimpose a 3D image of the patient's spine onto the patient's body, allowing surgeons to see what is under the skin without ever taking their eyes off the operating table.
4. Owl Labs Meeting Owl Pro
Meeting Owl Pro is a 360-degree tabletop camera that automatically switches focus to the speaker by pointing the lens and microphone towards them. The device turned out to be very useful for meetings and conferences where part of the audience is in the same room. Virtual participants have a better understanding of what is happening in the meeting as if they were there themselves. Today these cameras are used by over 50,000 companies and universities.
5. Insta360 One R
The special feature of this action camera is its modular design, which allows it to adapt the device for shooting any activity - from cycling to playing basketball. In addition to the two available lenses, 360-degree and ultra-wide, Insta360 has partnered with other companies to create a variety of interchangeable modules and mounts. All this, combined with machine learning software and constant updates, makes the device a truly universal solution for sports and outdoor activities.
6. Microsoft Surface Duo
This Android smartphone opens like a folder, offering a couple of screens at once. Expand it and it's a digital notebook: drag and drop from one app to another, expand one app to fill both screens, or use Surface Pen to draw on one screen and write on the other. The Surface Duo offers a glimpse into the future of mobile computing: it won't replace the iPhone and its amazing camera just yet, but it will see what smartphones will one day become.
7. MOON UltraLight
An elegant clip that solves the problem of shooting in low light conditions. You can attach it to any phone or laptop and illuminate the subject with just the right amount of light. The rechargeable device becomes brighter or dimmer at the touch of a finger and switches between cold and warm light. With its very compact size, this clip is much more convenient than many other lighting fixtures on the market.
8. Lexon Oblio
A smartphone can contain 10 times more bacteria than a toilet seat. Oblio solves this problem and charges your device at the same time. It is a wireless charging station that resembles a stylish vase and uses ultraviolet light to disinfect the gadget, killing 99% of bacteria on its surface in just 20 minutes. The accessory can be purchased at OZON.
9. Nuheara IQbuds2 MAX
These TWS headphones are named the best for one simple reason: it is the only model in its class that offers both active noise cancellation and sound processing technology that can isolate human speech from extraneous noise. So, in the metro, you can not hear the noise of the train, but you can hear your interlocutor standing nearby. In addition, these headphones can help stop hearing impairment, a condition that affects over 466 million people worldwide.
10. Allbirds Tree Dasher
In the manufacture of ordinary sneakers, oil-based synthetic materials and plastic are used, which clearly does not benefit the environment. Allbirds Tree Dasher is a different story altogether. They are almost entirely made from natural materials: eucalyptus, sheep wool, castor oil, and cane. All this not only did not worsen the necessary characteristics of sports shoes, but also improved them: eucalyptus fibers provide good ventilation, wool regulates the temperature inside, and a sugar cane midsole provides excellent cushioning.
11. Vollebak Full Metal Jacket
Can a jacket protect against viruses and bacteria? Yes, as long as it's made of copper, an element that kills influenza viruses and E. coli. A striking example of such clothing is the Vollebak Full Metal Jacket, which is 65% microscopic copper fiber. The creators hope that the jacket will serve as a source of inspiration for other brands that should start taking care of their customers' health for a long time.
12. The Greater Good Fresh Brewing Co Pinter
With a home brewing kit from the British company Greater Good Fresh Brewing Co, brewing foam is something everyone can do. A special naturally fermenting device called the Pinter uses Pinter Pack blends to make pilsner, IPA, or cider. Yeast and water are added to the selected composition: mix the ingredients in a pinter and wait the required number of days. The output will be 10 of the freshest pints of drink.
13. Air Vodka
For centuries, vodka has been produced by fermenting corn and wheat grains, which results in carbon emissions. Brooklyn-based startup AirCo. found the best way - to distill alcohol from water and carbon dioxide. In this process, CO 2 is converted into ethyl alcohol, which, according to the creators of the drink, allows each bottle produced to remove about a pound of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Simply put, this is the most environmentally friendly vodka.
14. Oura Ring
This year, the NBA Basketball League has had no COVID-19 cases among players or staff. One of the tools that made it possible to achieve this was the Oura Ring. When worn on your finger, the device tracks your heart rate, activity level, sleep quality, and even body temperature. Oura uses this data to create a “whole picture of the user's health”. According to preliminary data, at least 2,000 people from the NBA, including Shaquille O'Neill, have ordered these rings. Oura Ring now allows you to track the health of WNBA and NASCAR employees.
15. Narwal T10
Robot vacuum cleaners have been running around our rooms for years and sucking in the dust. Recently, more and more devices also offer wet cleaning. The possibilities are expanding, the capacities are growing, but you still have to clean the vacuum cleaners manually. Narwal T10 solves this problem with a charging station with a water tank, which washes and dries the rollers of the vacuum cleaner itself. You only need to occasionally change the water in the station and the attachments on the vacuum cleaner itself.
In addition to these inventions, Time noted new consoles from Microsoft and Sony, Animal Crossing: New Horizons from Nintendo, the Samsung Sero vertical TV, the LG Wing T-shaped smartphone, the GocycleGXi electric bike, and many other exciting new products for 2020.
